Latimer’s Garden Community Project wins TET Award for Social Impact
Latimer, the development arm of Clarion Housing Group, is delighted to announce that its groundbreaking Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community (TCBGC) project has been named a winner in the Inspire Future Generations TET Awards 2025, earning recognition in the ‘Children - Long-Term Programme’ category for the project’s significant social impact.
This recognition highlights Latimer’s innovative approach to fostering creativity, inclusion, and collaboration in the design and development of TCBGC. Through a series of engagement initiatives, Latimer has empowered children and young people to actively shape their neighbourhoods, giving them a meaningful voice in creating a sustainable and inclusive future.
The project includes a wide range of initiatives, such as the Essex Young Designers forum, school design challenges, summer studios, and family workshops, all of which empower children to contribute creative ideas to the development of the Garden Community. Youth-led projects, like the LAND SKY WATER installations and the transformation of The Meanwhile Garden, showcase the potential of inclusive design. Additionally, work experience opportunities introduce young people to careers in property, design, and placemaking, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their neighbourhoods.
Latimer’s success in the TET Awards also reflects the strength of its partnerships with organisations such as MATT+FIONA, Community Voluntary Services Tendring, Grounded Practice, Clarion Futures, and Mersea Homes. These collaborations demonstrate the power of collective effort in creating a more inclusive community through the built environment.
Russ Edwards, Project Director - East Colchester, commented:
“Our success in these important awards is testament to the whole project team's commitment to making sure that young people's voices are not only heard but listened too as well. In the context of a multi-generational project like our Garden Community, it is critical that we inspire the next generation to take ownership of their communities. This welcome recognition highlights Latimer's commitment to fostering meaningful engagement and maximising the potential of inclusive co-design to transform communities.”
Michele King, Community Liaison Manager at Latimer, added:
“We are incredibly honoured that the Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community project has been recognised. These awards celebrate the creativity and passion of the young people who have contributed to shaping their future community. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the impact of these initiatives being celebrated and recognised.”
